Genre analysis

This episode is called 'The devil made me do it' and is part of a documentry series called Public Enemy Number 1.

TYPE OF DOCUMENTRY
  • It is a mixed programme as it uses allot of different types throughout the entire programme.
THEMES
  • Good VS Evil
  • Religion VS Devil worship
  • Lack of communication between teens and their parents.
  • Disaffected youth and problems in society
  • Power of the media does it influence and how it influences peoples behaviour.
NARRATIVE STRUCTURE
  • It is open and it leaves a question at the end, it also lets people make up their own minds, it is also 'non-linear' and it is a single strand.
LEVI-STRAUSS
  • All narrative revolve around a series of binary oppositions. Eg: Good VS Evil, Urban VS Rural, Old VS Young.
CAMERA WORK
  • Handheld camera work on actual footage so the camerawork can respond to the action, Eg: at the concert and at the press conference interviews, there was a close-up and a medium closeup. They are framed to the left or right of the screen.
  • There was also some point of view shots for example at the manson gig, this made it more personal like the auidence is in the crowd.
  • There is also;
  • Longshot
  • Tracking Shot
  • Pans from left to right
  • Tilted frame
  • Extreme closeup
  • Close up
  • Two shot
  • Crane shot
  • Also stock footage is used, they have filmed religious iconography, and they have also filmed teenagers and they also have alot of stock footage of the town in general.
  • The stockfootage achored the documentry together, and it also established the location of the programme.
  • When doing this they have used a variety of shots and shot types.
MISE EN SCENE
  • The cap signified authority, this is when the police man is his office, they do this because they are interviewing them in their own neutral enviornment.
  • Manson was interviewed in his dressing room, this is an neutral enviornment.
SOUND
  • There was alot of different music used throughout the documentry.
  • Marlin manson music was used throughout the programme.
  • Religious church music was also used to cannote the religious iconography.
  • The music also related back to the subject matter.
  • The sound also added saddness to the programme.
  • The voiceover is male, and neutral and it is monotone and it is standard english this is because this is understood by everyone who speaks english.
  • The sound effects on the reconstruction of the murder are used wisely to add more effect.
  • There is also sound of translation over the italian.
  • There is also sound of actors reading out the diary of the girls.
EDITING
  • There is editing used on the title sequence, such flash's.
  • Dissolve was also used sparingly.
  • Also there are cuts but we dont notice it as it happens so quickly and fast, this is because the producers want to keep the auidences focus on the programme stays strong.
ARCHIVE MARERIAL
  • Mansons music videos.
  • TV coverage.
  • Newspaper headlines.
  • Extract from a TV programme.
  • Webpages.
  • Still images.
  • TV coverage of the killing spree throughout america.
GRAPHICS
  • The title has a cross on it so this cannotes the religious iconography.
  • They also use graphics by putting the lyrics up of Mansons concerts, so people who are not familar with his concerts can also understand what is being said.
  • Also the names of people and their relevence to the topic so the auidence know a little background knowledge.
  • The graphics used in this documentry anchors the auidience to the programme.
  • It also shows the verdicts of all the three girls at the end of the programme, so the auidence is at ease with the subject and not left completely on a cliff hanger.
JUXOPOSITION
  • This is used when the fans at the concert are filmed again religious church music in the background, they are oppsites but they create a meaning together.
